Starting the app takes a few seconds and in the first screen it will ask you to log in to your Monster account. You can skip this step but the possibilities within the App are very limited. You can only search for jobs, and not apply, without an account. So keep your login information at hand as you need it!Monster launches Recruitment iPad App in Europe

Work Location, Work Location, Work Location

Often people say that location is the most important thing for a business. Then, the most important things is… location. And so on. There are many different reasons why location is important to a business and attracting the right staff is one of them. For many people the work location is an important criteria when searching for jobs.

According to research, women attach more importance on location when choosing a new job. Up to 33 percent will not travel further than they already do. If your company is based on a location that can easily be reached by car and public transport this could be a great pull factor when trying to attract new staff. For example, if you are looking for a new Management Assistant the work location is probably in the top three job criteria.

Choosing the right location matters if you want to hire the right skills at the right price. If you are looking for particular skills some locations are more suitable than others due to related industries in that area, unemployment rates or competitors.

Take also into account the image and work atmosphere you want to create. High class businesses require top locations and a high class interior. Be consistent. Too often career sites are filled with stock photos and don’t give insight, literally, in the working environment. That’s a real shame because it’s so easy to add a video or photos to the career site.

Here are a few examples of companies who put extra effort in creating a great work atmosphere…

Will this be the busiest recruitment day of the year 2011?

Yes, at least according to a 2007 survey of 1,500 UK employees, by jobboard Jobsite. The majority of employees said they would begin their hunt on the first Monday of the New Year. In fact 42 per cent of people were planning to look for a new job in January. So today, Monday 3 January 2011, will be the busiest day and your inbox will be flooded by CV’s. Are you prepared?

So I turned to Monster in The Netherlands (the leading jobsite here) for actual figures and asked them the question; ‘Was the first Monday in 2010 the busiest recruitment day?’. They looked into their web statistics and came with the following results:

  1. We see on the first Monday of 2010 a major increase in visitor numbers compared to the day before. Many people are intending to enter the New Year to familiarize themselves on the labor market for another job.
  2. Even more striking is the average visit length (over 10 minutes) on the first Monday of 2010: throughout 2010 the average visit length is not as high.
  3. Yet the first Monday of the Year 2010 was not the busiest day of the year. We see in the months of the first and fourth quarter of 2010 that there were even busier days, in terms of visitors at Monsterboard.nl. What is striking is that these days on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday fall. People experience a new week as a New Year, meaning a fresh start with good intentions and new opportunities on the labor market. Will this be the busiest recruitment day of the year 2011?

Results of the Job Board Future survey are here!

(Note: Today’s guest post is by Jeff Dickey-Chasins . You can read more at his Job Board Doctor blog)

In August, I began gathering data from job seekers, HR professionals, recruiters, and job board employees and operators on the future of job boards and the methods for finding jobs and candidates. Now, 275 responses later, we have some results.

Each survey respondent identified him or herself as a job seeker, a HR or recruiting professional, or a job board employee or operator. Based on their response to that question, they then answered a series of questions specific to their background.

Here are some of the key findings:

  • LinkedIn and Twitter are the primary social media channels for recruiting
  • Most job seekers use 3 or more job boards in their search
  • Planning recruitment spending is static for job boards and going up for social media and referral programs
  • Job boards continue to see the recession as problem #1 for their business
  • Job seekers are most influenced when choosing a job board by ease of use and profession or industry focus
  • Most job boards are planning to add new social media features in the coming year
  • Less than 7% of HR or recruiting professionals have purchased .jobs domains for their organization
  • Most job seekers are using job boards to locate jobs, then apply for them (either on the company site or job board)
  • The biggest challenge for HR and recruiting professionals in meeting hiring goals is a lack of qualified applicants

The future of Job Boards 2020

Job Boards need to change and improve their services if they don’t want to go down the route of print-media. Clients have started to look for alternative ways to promote jobs faster, cheaper and more effective than Job Boards. Social Media platforms such as Twitter and LinkedIn lead the way in a new job market where supply and demand will find each other. These new social media tools are doing a much better job in connecting and communicating people with each other.

So what does this mean to Job Boards? Most likely a slow dead when they stop innovating in combination with (too) high prices and low service.  Their business models are unsustainable, as clients don’t accept this anymore today, or tomorrow. But the job search industry is changing and attempts are made to ensure that clients keep paying the premium prices for advertising jobs to active job seekers.

Here’s a top 10 list of some of excellent innovations that each Job Board should embrace:
